What comes to mind when you hear the word ‘Summer’? The hot sun, beaches,
vacation, halo-halo, ice cream, and MANGOES!!! Mangoes and comics? Manga!!! In the tail end of the 90’s, kids grew up watching the likes of giant robots, super saiyans, sailor soldiers, and ghost fighters. The early 2000s Anime Conventions started and never stopped since. It has greatly influenced how we dress up, eat, speak and even draw. This summer, Komikon would like to highlight Manga inspired local creations.

The 10th Summer Komikon is on April 13, Saturday (10am – 8pm) at the Bayanihan
Center, Unilab Compound, Pasig City. The featured guest artists are Koi Carreon, local
talent who illustrated variant covers for Marvel, Dreamworks and Lion Forge; Mike
Banting, illustrator of numerous titles from Black Ink, like Black Rose, Krono, and
Rebound; and the Studio Studios’ tandem of Ace Vitangcol and Jed Siroy of books such as Love is in the Bag, Angel Crush & My Celestial Family. Guests will be seated at the Komikon tables inside the main halls.

Melvin Calingo, known for his work in Pasig in Culture Crash Comics, will give a
workshop on creating dynamic manga characters from 1PM to 3PM at the conference
room E. He is then followed by Tepai Pascual, who will then discuss how Manga and
Anime have influenced local comic book making at 3:30PM to 5:30PM. Ms. Pascual is
the creator of National Books Awards and Madrigal-Gonzales awards nominated book
Mactan 1521. In the conference room BCD, beside having the Q&As of our special
guests, we are bringing back the staff of The Ultimate Anime Magazine of the 90’s,
Questor Magazine! The throwback reunion will be at 3PM to 4PM.

The Komiks Kalye (Komikon’s own Artists’ Alley) is a place where internationally
renowned comic illustrators offer to sketch and sign comics. They have illustrated for
Marvel, DC and international publishers. The artists in attendance are Heubert Khan
Michael (Vampirella), Edgar Tadeo (High Roads, Silver Surfer), Roy Allan Martinez (The Wicked, Son of M), Eman Casallos (Vampirella, Battlestar Galactica Starbuck), Kim Jacinto (Sentry / Venom), Elmer Damaso (Kingdom of Assassins), Miguel Mercado (Various Covers), and Jomar Bulda (Savage County / Jaded). The artist alley is at the conference room F from 1PM to 5PM.

Most importantly, Komikon releases its fourth anthology of outstanding independent
komiks, SULYAP 2019. Sulyap features eight comic creators and a sample of their
works. The chosen independent artists for this anthology are Chocnut-San (Walang
Laman Ang Kahon), David Sysing (Sorjano, Panimula), Fluffi (Norman Zero), Gabi Mara (Lore), Milo Galang (Patch), Ruvel Abril (Ultimo), Sabri Caye (Amara’s Kitchen), and William Anagaran (Crossfire, The Rookie). The artists will be seated all-together at the Komikon tables inside the Hall A & B. Books will be sold at P350.
